The delightful medieval town of Alquézar, founded by the Moors on the banks of the Vero river, gets its name from the fortress once built here, Al-qasr, a strategic defensive stronghold.
Nestled in the heart of the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park and within the Somontano wine region, this location offers plenty of active and adventure tourism options, from easy walks to canyoning and rafting, as well as the chance to sample the finest wines the region has to offer.
The first thing that catches the eye on arrival is the Colegiata de Sta. Maria, perched at the highest point of the village, built over the remains of the Moorish castle. The view over the gorges from the Colegiata is truly spectacular and its magnificent cloister is definitely worth a visit!
The town itself is a delight to explore, with its beautifully preserved, stone-built houses, pantile rooftops and winding cobbled streets which will transport you back in time.
