Overview

Right on the Portal de l'Angel, which links the Cathedral and Gothic Quarter with Plaza de Catalunya and the Modernist Eixample district, this 3-star hotel really couldn't be better placed. The pedestrianised shopping street, which runs parallel with La Rambla, is busy by day but quiet by night, a true luxury in such a central location. The hotel, housed in a 19th century palace, offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, not least thanks to its wonderful terrace garden and swimming pool, and the attentive staff who will do their best to cater for all your needs. Though grand in style, with an elegant facade and a central atrium complete with marble staircase, the 83 room hotel feels intimate and friendly. Standard rooms give onto light wells which have been decorated with trompe l'oeil murals, whilst superiors have street view, balcony or terrace. Breakfast is served in the conservatory overlooking the pool or on the terrace and there's a small bar serving gourmet snacks and cocktails - and there's a world of choice for eating and drinking within a stone's throw of the front door!

Barcelona Catalonia

Right on the Mediterranean with a warm sunny climate almost year-round, a unique and fascinating history and a cultural offering second to none, Barcelona is one of Europe's foremost tourist destinations and has so much to see and do it's impossible to do it justice here.

Each neighbourhood has a truly distinct character so in effect it's like visiting a dozen different cities in one:

The elegant Eixample neighbourhood, with its modernist architecture from Gaudi and his contemporaries, sits beside the historic Gothic quarter huddled around the Cathedral with it's moody, labyrinthine lanes and the bohemian Barrio Born, loaded with trendy boutiques, bars and restaurants.

The Port area is itself two-for-one offering with one part dedicated to bars and restaurants and centred on the aquarium, the other an active port host to all kinds of vessels from fishing launches to cruise liners as big as a city block. From there on to the Barceloneta, originally home to the city's fishermen, the beaches (about 6km of them) and the buzzing Olympic village with its classy Marina.

And if that's not enough you still have Parque Güell, Tibidabo, the zoo, the Ciutatella Park, Montjuic...

  • Modernist Route - a tour around the architecture of Gaudi and contemporaries.
  • Sagrada Familia - Gaudi's Cathedral, now near completion and open to the public.
  • Parque Güell - more Gaudí but open-air and with great views to the city.
  • Take the cable car to Montjuic - Olympic installations, Joan Miró gallery and fantastic views.
  • Las Ramblas and La Boquería market - a tourist trap but the market is great.
  • Take a stroll around the Gothic Quarter, visit the Cathedral, get lost in Born.
  • Go to the beach - lively at the Barceloneta end, nudist at the other, something for everyone.
  • Visit the zoo or aquarium.
  • Go up on the rooftop of La Pedrera with its famous chimneys - watch out for nocturnal concerts in the summer.
  • Get a good guidebook - there's so much more!

Aside from its architectural gems the city has a wealth of art galleries including the outstanding Museum of Contemporary Art and collections of Picasso, Antoni Tapies and Joan Miró as well as a world-class musical offering including the Liceu Opera House and the marvellous, modernist Palau de la Musica.

And we haven't even mentioned Las Ramblas...
