Overview

Perched at the entrance to the famous medieval bridge of Besalú, this charming 3-star hotel offers a unique position with privileged views of the river and village beyond.

Housed in a capriciously stylish, early 20th century mansion, the hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and its interiors are rich in period décor with original floors and ceilings.

Facilities include a cosy lounge with a fireplace, a dining room, a library, and a small spa with massage services.

Over the bridge Besalú is one of Catalunya’s best preserved medieval villages with pirates beneath the church floor, a rare Jewish Mikveh and an amazing museum of miniatures.

The volcanoes of La Garrotxa, Banyoles lake, Girona and Figueres all easily reached from this tranquil, ideally situated retreat.

Besalú Catalonia
A historical national property ("conjunt històric-artístic") since 1966, Besalu is most famous for its magnificent 12th-century Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river, with a handsome gateway at its midpoint. The church of Sant Pere dates from 1003 and has interesting features including pirate gravestones in the stone floor. Across the square from the church the Museum of miniatures created by jeweller and art collector Lluís Carreras also makes for a fascinating visit. The arcaded streets and squares are perfectly preserved and there’s an important restored mikveh, a ritual Jewish bath dating from the eleventh or twelfth century, as well as the remains of a medieval synagogue. There are some lovely terrazas in the village to take refreshement or, on a hot day, the Jardins de Martana (over the bridge from the town) have a lovely shady garden.
  • Visit medieval Besalú with its wonderful bridge and Jewish Quarter – complete with a rare Mikveh
  • Santa Margarida chapel nestled in the crater of the volcano
  • Take a hot-air balloon ride over the volcanoes – with views to the Mediterranean coast
  • Enjoy medieval Santa Pau – one of Catalonia’s prettiest villages
  • Museum of Miniatures – a fascinating collection of intricate micro-miniatures crafted with precision.
  • Enjoy the local Cuina Volcanica – produce grown in the rich volcanic soil
  • Take a trip to Banyoles lake resort – where the locals go to bathe, away from the crowds
  • Castellfollit de la Roca – perched on a rocky promontory
  • Taste “fesols de Santa Pau,” a prized local variety of white bean often used in traditional dishes.
