Bierge Spanish Pyrenees and Catalunya

The sleepy little village of Bierge at the southern gateway to the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park has been placed firmly on the map for mountain sports fans since the 70s when French canyoning enthusiasts discovered its magnificent canyons converted it into a world-class center for the sport. With over 60 canyons to explore and a solid infrastructure of well-trained guides, these days there is something for everyone from beginner to expert – and it’s a wonderful way to explore this magical limestone landscape sculpted by the waters flowing off the Pyrenees.

In nearby Alquézar, one of the best-kept medieval villages in the whole of the Pyrenees, there are walkways so you can visit the canyons comfortably on foot. Whilst in Alquézar don’t miss the opportunity to explore the old town and the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, a Romanesque gem.

The area is also a paradise for bird-watchers, who can see bearded vulture, Egyptian vultures, eagles and a large colony of griffon vultures. In addition to the birds of prey, the rock-nesting birds such as the wallcreeper can be seen as well as migratory species including the Hoopoe.

The village sits at the western edge of the Somontano wine region which is renowned for its fine Chardonnays and Gewurztraminer as well as a fine selection of red wines  – you may be familiar with Enate and Viñas del Vero – and enjoys a rich local gastronomy including olive oil, black truffles, almonds and Barbastro pink tomatoes.

  • Canyoning in the Sierra de Guara - something for all abilities
  • Visit Alquézar, a medieval gem with a rare mix of Moorish and Romanesque
  • World Heritage cave paintings in the Vero Valley
  • Birdwatching - vultures galore!
  • Mountain biking or climbing in the Sierra
  • Sample the Somontano wines, and visit one of the 60 wineries
  • Explore Ainsa with its castle and lammergeier sanctuary
