HCAR2, Carmona, Andalucia

Overview

One of Andalucia's most stylish and comfortable Paradors, this delightful hotel, set in the historic Alcázar del Rey Don Pedro fortress, offers truly stunning panoramic views over the fertile plain of the River Corbones and the perfect base from which to discover Carmona - or a fantastic alternative from which to visit Sevilla if you wish to avoid the big-city hustle and bustle. Known as 'little Seville' Carmona is probably the older settlement and different civilisations from the Tartessos through Romans and Moors have left their legacy here. The city museum is fascinating and the Gate of Sevilla, the Alcázar itself and the Roman Necropolis are all not to be missed. Although the Alcázar was built by Pedro the Cruel in the 14th century the Parador facilities are quite modern and include a fantastic pool, gardens, patio and Mudéjar fountain, Cupulán room, and a wonderful terrace from which to enjoy the magnificent views and the cool evening breezes. The bright and spacious bedrooms have a classic d?cor in keeping with the 14th century citadel, some enhanced with Sevillian tiling.

Carmona Andalucia

Known as the mini-Sevilla, Carmona has its own Alcazar, now a Parador, and two magnificent monumental gates, the best of which, la Puerta de Sevilla, has splendid Moorish archways sitting atop Roman foundations. There's even a copy of the Giralda, La Giraldilla, just outside the town walls.

Thought to be older than Sevilla, neolithic remains have been found nearby and there is a fine Roman necropolis just a short distance from the city. In the city museum you can see some fine pottery left behind by the Tartesos but everywhere you look you'll find the traces left by passing empires.

The old town occupies a strategic position and offers magnificent views over the surrounding vega (fertile river basin). It is nice and compact and easy to get around on foot and there are plenty of authentic tapas bars and restaurants and pleasant squares and terraces to relax and enjoy the local 'ambiente'.

1. Carmona old town with its elegant palaces and squares 2. Gates of Sevilla & Cordoba - both visitable 3. Oil tasting in the Plaza de Abastos market place 4. Roman necropolis - just 10 minutes' walk from the city, elaborate monumental tombs carved into the rock 5. Climb the Giraldilla, just outside the Puerta de Sevilla 6. Viist the numerous convents in the town and try their delicious baked goodies. 6. Take a trip to Seville magnificent cathedral, Alcazar, Barrio Vera Cruz and so much more 7. Visit Osuna, with it's fine medieval University and Colegiata. Don't miss Calle San Pedro with its mansions. The town was also used for filming Game of Thrones season 5. 8. Come at Easter - the main event of the year in the town.
