Cascais and Estoril Portugal

Just 40 minutes’  train trip from the centre of the capital city, Cascais, and neighbouring Estoril, with their string of golden sandy beaches, are known as the ‘Portuguese Riviera’.

The resort was made popular at the turn of the 20th century by King Luis I, who set up his summer residence here. The city’s well-heeled soon followed, building delightful palaces and mansions, some of which – for example the marvellous Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães - survive to this day.

In the Second World War, Cascais and Estoril enjoyed a second boom as a safe haven for European nobles and the wealthy in neutral Portugal. Spies and double agents also found here the perfect environment for their espionage networks. Famous names such as Ian Fleming, Juan Pujol García ("Garbo" / "Alaric"), Dusko Popov and Graham Greene made it their wartime base and you can still visit some of the famous locations such as the Palace Hotel, where Fleming stayed, and the Casino de Estoril which inspired Casino Royale.

These days, aside from a lively beach scene, the resort has a strong arts and crafts offering with lots of boutique shops as well as interesting small museums including Paula Rego’s Casa Das Historias. Sintra, with its fascinating castles, is just a 30-minute bus ride as is the surfy Praia de Guincho on the wild Atlantic coast.
