Near the top of a mountain pass, high up in the Spanish Pyrenees beside the ski-resort of Candanchu, the 5-star ‘Gran Lujo’ hotel of Canfranc Estación is without doubt a unique and surprising experience. Built in 1928 as a grandiose railway station to link the Spanish rail system with the French, the building is truly colossal, standing three storeys high and over 240m in length. Falling into disrepair with the onset of the Spanish Civil and Second World Wars and eventually abandoned in the 70s, the magnificent building was designated as a Site of Cultural Interest in 2002 has now been restored to its former glory as a luxury hotel. The hotel has just 104 rooms, each tastefully designed with a blend of period art-deco elements, creating a contemporary yet nostalgic feeling. You'll find noble materials like wood and brass, along with luxurious fabrics such as velvet, all inspired by the style of the 1920s. With its fascinating history and immense size it would be easy to lose sight of the setting which is itself quite spectacular, an unspoilt wilderness of outstanding beauty with mountains reaching over 2600m. Right beside the French border the hotel is a great basefor exploring the western valleys of the Pyrenees on either side of the border. Another standout feature of this charming hotel is its excellent gastronomy, offering three restaurants, including the Royal Breakfast concept, as well as gastronomic and à la carte options. Two carriages have been restored in a classic 20th-century style to house these restaurants and give a feel of the station’s golden age. The hotel also features a Wellness Spa (at extra charge), complete with a heated pool and fitness area, as well as a library cocktail bar – again with that ‘period’ feel. The reception area is located in the historic lobby of the station, adding to the hotel's charm.
