HCRT1, Cuzcurrita del Rio Tiron, North Spain

Overview

This fine 17th century mansion, in the centre of the picturesque, medieval village of Cuzcurrita del Rio Tiron, in La Rioja Alta, has been recently restored but certainly has a history! Originally the home of a wealthy family, in the 1920's and 30's, the building was put to use as a bakery, theatre and cinema before, during the Civil War, being occupied by Italian troops who passed on their pasta recipes to the locals. The present owners, Laura and Jose Angel, the most welcoming and attentive of hosts, fell in love with the place and restored the building into the very special small hotel it is today. Maintaining many of the original features - the magnificent stonework, the high beamed ceilings, the impressive main staircase and cupula, they painstakingly decorated and furnished the very comfortable rooms with cinematic themes, linking them to the history of the house and creating a perfect balance of the past and present.

Accommodation details

Cuzcurrita del Rio Tiron North Spain

The epitome of a classic Riojan village, seemingly untouched by time with stone-built houses, an imposing medieval castle and church and a river running through Cuzcurrita is quite sleepy for most of the year but comes alive in the summer, when Basque families move in to enjoy the hot, dry climate and the swimming pools, and again in October when the wine harvest brings life to the whole region. With Haro and Santo Domingo de la Calzada just nearby the village is well placed to discover the highlights of the Rioja wine region and the lesser know mountains the region has to offer (you can ski in the winter months) around the pretty town of Ezcaray.

  • Winery tours and tastings in over 500 renowned vineyards.
  • Logroño's charming old town and lively tapas bars of Calle Laurel
  • The historic Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada on the Camino de Santiago
  • Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park for hiking and nature.
  • Monasteries of Yuso and Suso in San Millán de la Cogolla.
  • Haro Wine Festival (Batalla del Vino) in late June.
