Located in the uppermost part of the town of Monforte de Lemos, commanding magnificent views over the town and the valley beyond, the Palace of the Counts of Lemos now houses the splendid, 4-star Parador de Monforte. The historic site includes the palace, the keep and the monastery of San Vicente do Pino which dates back to the 9th century, although the current structure was built in the 17th century in the neoclassical style and boasts a central cloister with exceptionally well carved stonework. The spacious rooms have been gently and sympathetically modernised and offer free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Some have vaulted ceilings, exposed-stone walls and loft bedrooms. Suites add separate living rooms with sofa-beds. An elegant, fine-dining restaurant features wood-beamed ceilings. Other amenities include a hot tub, a gym and (in summer months) an outdoor pool. Down below the Parador and Castle Monforte has an elegant, provincial town centre which acts as the main centre for the Ribera Sacra wine trade and offers some nice bars and restaurants. The town is a good base from which to explore the Ribera Sacra region with the gorges of the Rio Sil and Miño both within easy reach as well as some of the most interesting wineries and monasteries
