Haro North Spain

Right on the River Ebro at the western end of the Rioja Alta region (where the high-end Riojas are produced) Haro serves as one of the main centres for the wine trade in the area.

Aside from teh wine trade Haro is a typical market town with a nicely kept old-town centre with an interesting selection of shops and plenty of lively bars and restaurants where you can sample the local produce.

The town gets particularly busy in late June for the Battle of Wine (not for the faint hearted) and the Fiesta de la Estaciones (a major event in the wine calendar - book ahead!) then again in late September into October when the wine is harvested, but it's a busy city throughout the summer months and popular with Spanish visitors looking for an authentic taste of La Rioja.

  • Visit Haro's famous Barrio de la Estación - home to some of Spain's finest wineries
  • Winery tours and tastings in over 500 renowned vineyards.
  • Logroño's charming old town and lively tapas bars of Calle Laurel
  • The historic Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada on the Camino de Santiago
  • Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park for hiking and nature.
  • Monasteries of Yuso and Suso in San Millán de la Cogolla.
  • Haro Wine Festival (Batalla del Vino) in late June.
  • Dinastia Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture – not to be missed
  • Dinosaurs Museum in Enciso showcasing the region's paleontological heritage.
  • Visit the medieval villages of Laguardia, Labastida, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Cuzcurrita del Rio Tirón and many more…
  • Explore the vineyards and countryside, with scenic views of rolling hills and vine-covered landscapes.
  • Marqués de Riscal winery, designed by Frank Gehry - one of several ‘Catedrales de Vino’ in the area designed by famous architects.
  • Take a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards for a unique perspective.
