This 3-star hotel is one of the more modern Paradors, purpose built, at the entrance to the Montaña Palentina Nature Park, to bring visitors to this little-known spot of outstanding beauty - a privileged setting for walkers and nature lovers and an ideal base for touring in the stunning mountain scenery of Palencia.
Rooms at the Parador are all spacious and modern in design, yet warmly decorated in pastel shades with wooden floors and beamed ceilings in keeping with the rural setting. Superior rooms offer sitting areas and balconies and some offer views to the reservoir and mountains beyond.
The hotel has a large wood-panelled restaurant with a bar as well as a fireside lounge and a games room with a pool table, but the star of the show is without doubt the sunny terrace with splendid views to the nature reserve.
Larger than the Picos de Europa, its famous neighbour, the Montaña Palentina Nature Park (formerly called the Fuentes Carrionas Reserve) is equally beautiful and, perhaps due to its having fewer visitors, is home to a greater variety of wildlife, including Brown Bears and Capercaillie.
Nearby the picturesque Ruesga Reservoir is one of a string stretching in both directions to Riaño in the west and the enormous Embalse del Ebro near that river’s source a little to the east, providing stunning scenery wherever you travel in the region.
Apart from its natural beauty the area boasts some delightful historic towns and a fine selection of Romanesque art, such as the monastery of Santa María La Real in Aguilar de Campo, the church of Santa María del Castillo in Cervera or the cave church of Olleros de Pisuerga.
