Where the road ends and the mountain begins Fuente Dé is hardly a village at all but is firmly at the top of the ‘must-see’ list of any visitor to the Picos de Europa for one simple reason – the Fuende Dé Cable Car (Teleférico de Fuente Dé).
The cable car is an iconic aerial lift, carrying visitors swiftly into the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park with truly breathtaking views. Opened in 1966 it was first proposed in the early 1960s by mountaineering enthusiast José Antonio Odriozola to improve access to the high mountain terrain.
One of Europe’s longest single-span aerial lifts, the cable car climbs a vertical drop of 753 metres (2,500ft) from its base station in Fuente Dé to the top station known as El Cable at around 1,850 m (6,000ft). Each cabin can carry up to 20 passengers, and the ride to the summit takes roughly 3 minutes and 40 seconds at about 10 m/s.
At the top, visitors are greeted by dramatic panoramas of limestone peaks and deep valleys, with the Mirador del Cable viewpoint offering spectacular photo opportunities and access to hiking trails into the Picos de Europa.
Back in the village itself there are two hotels, both of which have a restaurant and bar, and little else except amazing views and some lovely walks.
The delightful village of Mogrovejo (setting for a film version of Heidi) is a 15 minute drive away, and Potes 10 minutes further on, so Fuente Dé offers the full ‘mountain retreat’ experience whilst still giving good access to the Liébana Valley and beyond.
