Set in a formidable castle, known as the Castle of Carlos V but dating back to the 10th Century, the Parador de Hondarribia occupies a once-strategic - now-privileged position overlooking the Bidasoa Estuary with views to the Bay of Biscay and France across the water. The beautiful castle has been thoughtfully restored to house the hotel and features original arches and period details such as suits of armour, cannons and spears. There are banquet rooms, courtyards and a charming courtyard terrace and outer terrace with fantastic views to the estuary and beyond where you can relax with a drink from the bar. Walk out the door into the well preserved old-town and from there down to the fisherman's quarter with lively bars serving txakoli and pintxos - or whatever takes you fancy. Stroll a little further and you come to the sandy beach and marina - what more could you ask for! San Sebastian is just 20 minutes' drive away and the French Pays Basque Hendaye, St Jean de Luz and Biarritz are within easy reach. Or head into the Pyrenees - for a taster you can take the train to the top of La Rhune just nearby for the most wonderful views over the Bay of Biscay.
