HLUA1, Luarca, North Spain

Overview

This is a very special place to stay - indeed a real gem.

The hotel is set above the bustling port of Luarca in a residential area with some very interesting crumbling down old palacios.

Steps near the hotel lead down to the port, but you can also drive down by the lighthouse and unusual cemetery.

The hotel building was built in 1899 in the traditional style of its time known as a Casa Indiano and belonged to the Pachorro family who had made their fortune in the Carribean. The present owners have lovingly restored it to keep its original touches of the "Belle Epoque".

It is set in beautiful grounds with a swimming pool, spa, sauna and workout room. There is a pleasant lounge, breakfast room with a bar serving snacks and drinks and a small cafeteria serving tapas and drinks.

You feel at home at once here - it is quiet, relaxing, very comfortable and a pleasure just to be in. The young staff are extremely pleasant and will do all they can to help and advise you about local activities in the area.

Luarca North Spain

"La Villa Blanca de la Costa Verde" - the white town of the green coast. A busy fishing port and town originating from medieval times when the main activity was whaling. There are two ways in from the main road, the first from El Villar being the best, taking you past many splendid "mansiones de indianos" and the cemetery where you will find the tomb of Severo Ochoa, born in Luarca and given the Nobel prize for medicine.

In the town itself there are many modernist buildings by the architects Manuel del Busto and Juan Miguel de la Guardia. Up above the town is a quarter known as "El Cambaral" with an incredible view over the town and "La Mesa de Noblismo Gremio de Mareantes and Navegantes de Luarca" which takes us back to medieval times when fishermen decided whether or not to go out to sea if there was a storm or a gale. Next to "La Mesa" there are fifteen tiles depicting the history of Luarca.
There is also now a museum called "El Aula del Mar" which amongst its exhibits has giant squid.

Apart from the cultural side of Luarca you are spoilt for restaurants and bars to suit all pockets and there are some very good little old fashioned shops.
