Housed in an 18th century baroque convent in the town centre of Mérida, this 4-star hotel was one of the first heritage sites to be converted into a Parador in 1933. The building, set on the site of a Roman temple, has preserved most of its original features including the wide corridors, the cloister and the orchard (with some interesting archaeological pieces) and retains a sense of history and the genuine feel of a convent. Rooms are decorated in a traditional Spanish style and some have original features such as vaulted ceilings, arches and small balconies. There's a small swimming pool in the mature, shady gardens which can be a real oasis from the mid-day heat of Extremadura. There is also a terrace and cloister to relax in as well as a games room, a gym and a sauna. The location couldn't be better, with the town centre just nearby and the Roman Theatre - without doubt one of Spain's top Heritage sites - just a 15 minute walk away (and the hotel offers bike hire should you prefer). Mérida has so much to offer, the Roman ruins and accompanying museum are definitely not to be missed but there are also Moorish, Visigothic and Mudejar remains to discover - and the helpful staff will make sure you get the most out of your visit.
82 spacious, en-suite rooms are all decorated in a traditional style with white walls, tiled floors and traditional Castilian furnishings. Some have features such as four poster beds, beamed ceilings and most have small balconies. Superior rooms and suites are larger and have a sitting area.

A buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant.The restaurant offers traditional Extremaduran gastronomy, with Roman and Arab influences using excellent local produce such as acorn-fed ham, Corderex lamb, Iberian pork and the superb fruit and vegetables without forgetting the more regional dishes.There is also a snack bar and terrace and plenty of eateries within a short walk.
The last city on the route of the Vía de la Plata, founded in 23 BC, the former capital of Lusitania, contains more Roman remains than any other city in Spain - from engineering works to domestic villas, to places of worship, of entertainment and culture, the sights will arouse anyone’s interest. The highlights are the elaborate and beautiful Teatro Romano, one of the best preserved anywhere in the Roman empire and stage to a magnificent theatre festival held in July and August and the huge Anfiteatro where Roman gladiators battled fierce wild beasts.
