Olite Spanish Pyrenees and Catalunya
Olite is one of of Spain's most spectacular and best-kept medieval towns with its delightful old-town huddled around and below the fairy-tale Royal Palace-cum-Castle, once home to the Kings of Navarra.
The castle itself is not to be missed but just to stroll around the ancient streets is fascinating with many noble houses boasting imposing arched doorways and coats of arms.
At the heart of the Navarran wine region and at the north of the Ribera de Navarra, famed for its delicious high-end market-garden produce, Olite is the ideal base to enjoy the region's wonderful gastronomic offering.
The town has a good selection of bars and restaurants, mostly arranged around the main squares, and a lovely outdoor municipal pool for when things get hot (and in the summer months they certainly can).
