HPAL2, Santa Maria de Mave, Madrid and Inland Spain

Overview

Step back in time in this former C12th Benedictine monastery in the small, farming village of Santa Maria de Mave in the mountains of Palencia.

The impressive building, set in beautiful and well- tended, grounds, has been stylishly and elegantly renovated; strong remnants of the past blending in well with modern design.

You’ll find peace and quiet here, as would its former occupants, but the hotel has all the facilities, including a beautifully designed gourmet restaurant and an attractive bar for a pre-prandial drink or a coffee at any time. Whatever your needs, the friendly and helpful staff, will be there to attend to you.

Next door, the delightful Romanesque church of Santa Maria La Real de Mave, at one time belonging to the monastery, is open for visits and just a short drive away you will be surprised by the very special Eremitorio Rupestre de Santos Justo y Pastor, a tiny church, built into the rocks, dating back to C9th.

Aguilar de Campoo with its castle and other monuments is a little further (you can even take the train from the village station) and for walkers and cyclists the nearby natural monuments of Las Tuerces, Canon de la Horadada and Monte Cilda beckon.

Accommodation details

  • 1 x Suite / family room with a king size bed and two bunk beds if required, a separate sitting area with comfy chairs and a projector style T.V., a free standing Japanese wooden bathtub as well as the ensuite bathroom with a large shower unit.

N.B. The former stables of the monastery have now been converted into an annex to the hotel and house fourteen functional bedrooms, some with a kitchenette, with ensuite bathrooms. Pets are admitted in these. The guests of these rooms have access to the hotel’s facilities.

Restaurant

The hotel has a beautifully designed and decorated gourmet restaurant (open to the public) on the ground floor. There is also a cafeteria / snack bar.

The chef is the brother of the owner of the hotel. They serve traditional food, using best quality local ingredients (including salmon trout from the Rio Pisuerga) with innovative touches. Medium priced. Very attentive service.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant and includes homemade biscuits and bread for toast, natural juice, cold cuts and a hot table with scrambled eggs and bacon.

The restaurant is closed Sunday nights and all day Monday but the cafeteria is always open for lighter meals and snacks.

Santa Maria de Mave Madrid and Inland Spain

In the Montana Palentina, 90 kilometres north of the regional capital of Palencia, Santa Maria de Mave and neighbouring Mave are just small farming hamlets on the Camino de Besaya pilgrim route which links the Cantabrian coast with Carrion de los Condes on the main Camino de de Santiago, the ‘Camino del Francés’.

Linked to the “outer world” by the railway though (there is a station in the village) the hamlets well known for their C12th Benedictine monastery, now converted into a hotel, and for the adjoining church Santa Maria La Real de Mave, a Romanesque jewel and one of the most important in the province of Palencia.

Nearby, the 9th century hermitage of Ermita Rupestre de los Santos Justo y Pastor, built into the rocks at Olleros de Pisuerga, is truly exceptional.

For keen walkers and cyclists the natural monuments of Las Tuerces and Canon de la Horadada are also close at hand and the Montaña Palentina Nature Park plays host to some rare species including the Peninsula’s largest population of Brown Bears.

Cervera de Pisuerga, which sits at the entrance to the park is just half an hour’s drive and the historic, biscuit-making town of Aguilar de Campoo with its rich heritage, a good choice of shops and bars and restaurants is ten kilometres away.
