Set in a peaceful spot amongst olive groves and pine forest this 16th-century farmhouse has been lovingly restored by the current owners in a cosy, welcoming style. The extensive grounds (50,000 square metres!) are immaculately kept with a swimming pool and terrace area where you can dine out or just relax in the Catalán sunshine. Service is highly personal and the owners, Gloria y Carles pay attention to every detail including the ecological aspects. Food is home cooked and locally sourced - slow-food - and adapted to the requirements of each guest. Pals, famed as one of the prettiest medieval villages in Spain, is just ten minutes' drive away and Girona, with its wonderful old-town and rich Jewish heritage, 40 minutes. Head for the coast and you'll be spoilt for choice with the prettiest villages of the Costa Brava - from Begur to San Feliu de Guixols - all within half an hours' drive.

Just 15 minutes' drive in from the beaches of the Costa Brava the fortified, medieval village of Peratallada is one of Catalunya's prettiest and best preserved villages. It owes its name to the moat system, carved out of the bedrock (Pera meaning rock, tallada, carved) and indeed the whole village seems to grow out of the rock it sits on. With its castle, town-wall and graceful archways framing picture-perfect views this is the archetype of a Mediterranean medieval village. Loose yourself in the tight winding passages, marvel at the Romanesque architecture or relax with a 'café con leche' in the cloistered square.
