HSAJ1, Sajazarra, North Spain

Overview

At one time an inn, this 19th century mansion in the medieval village of Sajazarra (meaning Lake of Flowers) in the Rioja Alta region, has been lovingly and carefully restored by its owners to make a comfortable and relaxing small hotel.

Great attention has been paid to maintaining its original features and objets d'art and other curiosities from the region blend in with antique furniture. There is even an old barber's chair in the entrada!

Each of the nine double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and T.V. have been individually furnished and decorated with your comfort in mind. The bathrooms are particularly artistic! Two of the bedrooms have terraces which look out over rooftops and vineyards and the Sierra de La Demanda beyond.

Berta and her family, with their in depth knowledge of the area, can organise visits to the local bodegas and wine tastings and will make sure your stay is a pleasant and memorable one.

Sajazarra North Spain

The picturesque, medieval village of Sajazarra, lies in a valley of vineyards, backed by the dramatic, sharp pointed crags of Pena Lengua, in the Rioja Alta. With its grand 15th century castle, fine casonas and mansions, it has been beautifully preserved, yet remains a relaxing and unspoilt village with agricultural life still much at its core. It does attract visitors though, particularly for its popular classical music festival, held in August and for its lively fiesta on 25th April. The village has two bars, one of which has a country style restaurant and several small bodegas. You are very well placed for exploring the region with Haro, the wine capital with its grand bodegas at 11kms, Santo Domingo de La Calzada with its cathedral and the famous crowing cock, a short drive, and beyond the ski resort at Ezcaray and the ancient monasteries of Suso and Yuso at San Millan de la Cogolla. Yet nearer at hand the surrounding villages of Casalarreina, Tirgo and Cuzcurrita del Rio Tiron must not be missed.

  • Winery tours and tastings in over 500 renowned vineyards.
  • Visit the charming mountain village of Ezcarray - Basque-style tapas await!
  • Logroño's charming old town and lively tapas bars of Calle Laurel.

  • Haro Wine Festival (Batalla del Vino) in late June.
  • Dinastia Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture – not to be missed.
  • Dinosaurs Museum in Enciso showcasing the region's paleontological heritage.
