Overview
Built by the Marquess de Pombo, one of the founders of Banco Santander, in the 19th century, the Palacio de Pombo stands at the end of the elegant central square which also bears his name and which was originally the private gardens of the grand house.
A protected building, the palace has recently undergone a complete, two-year renovation retaining the original facade with its marine and mercantile themes and its characteristic towers which house the superior rooms. Inside, the halls have been preserved with the frescoes on their walls, as well as the spectacular marble staircase.
The hotel occupies the upper story of this elegant, modernist building which it shares with the Royal Club of Regattas, and offers 64 rooms, as well as meeting and event rooms, a restaurant (breakfast only) and a cafeteria with views of the square.
Rooms are furnished in a minimalistic style with plain white walls and elegant furnishings yet retain period touches such as wooden shutters and plaster mouldings in keeping with the building's history. Standard rooms are a comfortable size whilst superior rooms are duplex (two floors) and are housed in the towers.
At the heart of the city's shopping district, a stone's throw from the Port, the Bot?-n Centre, the wonderful Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria and the Barrio Pesquero (where fishy delights await), and just 2km from the beaches - the hotel could not be better located. And the helpful staff will make sure you get the most out of your visit to Santander.
