Sepúlveda Madrid and Inland Spain

Perched dramatically above the deep gorges of the Duratón River, Sepúlveda is a striking medieval town rich in Castilian history and atmosphere. Its well-preserved old quarter, ancient walls and Romanesque churches speak of centuries of frontier life between Christian and Moorish Spain.

The town’s narrow streets lead to viewpoints with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and the Hoces del Río Duratón Natural Park below, one of the most impressive natural landscapes in the region. Sepúlveda also has a long-standing culinary tradition and is renowned for its roast lamb.

Nearby, the spectacular canyon of the Duratón, the hermitage of San Frutos and the historic towns of Pedraza and Ayllón make excellent excursions, offering a fine mix of history, scenery and rural Castile.
