HTDO5, Toledo, Madrid and Inland Spain

Overview

Cigarral del Pintor offers an appealing alternative to staying within Toledo itself, particularly for clients travelling by car. Set among the traditional cigarrales on the outskirts of the city, it combines a quiet, rural atmosphere with straightforward access to Toledo’s historic centre, approximately 6 km away. Free on-site parking removes one of the principal practical difficulties of a city stay, while the gardens and swimming pool provide somewhere to relax after sightseeing.

The property has the feel of a small country house, with a typical Spanish style. Gardens planted with fruit trees and aromatic plants surround the house, with terraces looking across the neighbouring olive groves. Inside, there are comfortable communal areas including a lounge with fireplace and library, while the individually styled bedrooms are named after artists including El Greco, Velázquez, Sorolla and Picasso.

For a touring itinerary, its main strength is the balance between setting and convenience. Guests can drive into Toledo for sightseeing and restaurants, then return to a quieter base with space, parking and a pool. It is particularly well suited to travellers who prefer to avoid driving and parking within the historic centre of Toledo.

Toledo Madrid and Inland Spain

Toledo sits majestically above the Tagus River and now represents one of the most visited sites in all Spain. The history of Toledo dates back to Roman occupation (Toletum) circa 192BCE.

The ruins of the Roman circus are still visible just outside the walls of the city. Roman occupation was followed by Visigoth rule, Muslim rule and finally the Reconquest of Toledo in 1085.

Toledo was the capital of the Spanish empire until the mid 1500's when the royal court moved to Madrid. The winding, cobbled streets of the old town are often crowded with locals and tourists, as well as a surprisingly large number of cars and vans. Don't miss the 13th century cathedral or the Alcázar which sits atop the town.

Denoted a UNESCO heritage site in 1986, Toledo is a worthwhile day-trip from Madrid. However, now as a stop on every day trip itinerary it often crowded with tourists, especially during the summer.

  • Explore Toledo's UNESCO-listed historic centre.
  • Visit Toledo Cathedral.
  • See El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in the Church of Santo Tomé.
  • Visit the former Jewish quarter and its historic synagogues.
  • Explore the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.
  • Visit the El Greco Museum.
  • Walk between Toledo's principal viewpoints over the River Tagus.
  • Cross the historic Puente de San Martín.
  • Explore Toledo's tradition of sword-making and damascene metalwork.
  • Visit Puy du Fou España, approximately 15 minutes from Toledo by car.
