Vitoria-Gasteiz North Spain

Often overlooked in favour of its sister cities, San Sebastian and Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, administrative capital of Euskadi, has much to offer the visitor looking for an authentic view of Basque life – without the crowds!

Fans of Ken Follett - and anyone with an interest in medieval architecture – can visit the Cathedral of Vitoria which he studied extensively in researching his books. Although under restoration you can visit the cathedral and take a fascinating, close-up look at the works.   Vitoria’s old town has the oldest defensive walls in the region and the Battle of Vitoria, one of the decisive battles in Wellington’s Peninsula Campaign, was fought just to the north and west of the city (hence the imposing memorial statue in the main square).

Nowadays Vitoria is a typical provincial capital, quiet and unassuming but at the same time wealthy and well-kept. The city offers plenty of good restaurants and tapas bars and there always seems to be something going on.

A ‘green ring’ of parkland and wetlands surround the city, great for walkers and cyclists, beyond that a beautiful reservoir with beaches (Ulibarri-Gamboa) makes for an easy excursion and only slightly further out serious mountains can be found in every direction. And, if that wasn’t enough, the Rioja wine region lies less than half an hour’s drive to the south!
