Set in a residential area above the town of Batalha, with its astonishingly beautiful C14th Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria, this delightful, family run hotel with great amenities including a swimming pool, small gym and even an art and craft's shop, will embrace you at once with its informal and relaxing atmosphere.

The hotel is light, bright and colourful with a modern, elegant design and the owner's original paintings and objects d'art adding a very special touch. The bedrooms are commodious, most having balconies and some offering spectacular views of the monastery. Not only is she an artist, but the owner also produces all the homemade jams and honey served at breakfast!

Just a very short walk down to the town and the monastery, this makes a perfect base for exploring the region of Estremadura and Ribatejo and its magnificent monumental sights at Tomar, Alcobaça and Óbidos. For keen walkers the lovely Serras de Aire e Candeeiros are virtually on your doorstep and the Atlantic beaches near Nazaré are just half an hour's drive away.

The helpful, friendly and attentive staff and family will ensure that your stay is a memorable one.

Batalha, Portugal

If you visit Batalha you're there for the monastery, Mosteiro de Santa María de Victória, Portugal's second most visited monument.

Commissioned in 1385 after the battle of Aljubarrota where the Portuguese beat the Castilian forces in spite of being vastly outnumbered and housing the tombs of King João I (the founder), his son Henry 'the Navigator' and Dom Duarte, the monastery holds a very important place in Portuguese history and culture.

Batalha is also a perfect base to visit all of Estremadura's other monuments especially the Convento de Cristo in Tomar and the monastery of Alcobaça (you can get a joint ticket for all three, on sale at any of them). Medieval Óbidos is also within easy reach.

But it's certainly not all about the 'old stones'! The unique landscape of Parque Natural de las Sierras de Aire y Candeeiros is just nearby and the surf-washed Atlantic coast is just 20km away.Mosteiro de Santa María de Victória.

  • Parque Natural de las Sierras de Aire y Candeeiros.
  • Nazaré – lively seaside town famous for its 'monster waves'.
  • Alcobaça monastery famous for its immense kitchens.
  • Convento de Cristo in the lovely town of Tomar.
  • São Martinho do Porto – pretty, laid-back, family resort on a bay.
  • Medieval-walled Óbidos, famous for its white houses.
  • Get surfing – or just marvel at the waves
