One of Spain's more modern Paradors, brick-built to an innovative design in the 1970s, the Parador of Segovia offers a resort-style experience just two miles out from the historic centre.

Most rooms have balconies offering the most wonderful views over the city, especially attractive by night when the monuments are lit up. And you can enjoy the same panoramic vistas as you relax by the pool (indoor or outdoor) or enjoy a gourmet meal in the restaurant. There's a gym, table tennis and tennis courts if you're feeling active as well as a spa should you prefer to unwind.

The town is within walking distance but should you wish to save your energies to see all the wonderful sights you'll find taxis are both plentiful and affordable. The aqueduct, the Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Jewish quarter are all within a short distance of each other, as are the traditional restaurants serving Segovia?s famous suckling pig and roast lamb – but there's so much to marvel at you might be glad of a ride home at the end of the day.

The hotel's ease of access and free parking make it the perfect base to explore further afield, with the medieval villages of Sepulveda and Pedraza and the stunning gorges of the Rio Duratón within an hour's excursion. Don't miss the 17th century royal residence La Granja de San Ildefonso, Spain's answer to Versailles with truly magnificent grounds, just 20 minutes' drive from the hotel.
