Valladolid, Madrid and Inland Spain

Once the capital of Castille and later of unified Spain, scene of the marriage of Isabel and Ferdinand the ‘Catholic Kings’, home to Cervantes, deathbed of Columbus… this little-known city certainly has more than its fair share of history!

The church of San Pablo with its wonderful Isabeline façade, commissioned by the infamous Torquemada, is certainly not to be missed and the Cathedral, noted for its artworks, houses a nice museum with religious carvings. The house of Columbus and Cervantes are both visitable museums and there’s a museum of African art which is well worth a visit.

Located within five wine regions; Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro, Tierra de León, and Cigales Valladolid is effectively the ‘wine capital’ of Castilla y León. This combined with its role as host of the annual National Tapas Championship (in which it usually earns a good medal-count) make it a wonderful city for a gastronomic visit and the small, friendly centre, set around the imposing main square, is easy to get around.

  • For wine-lovers a trip up the ‘Royal Mile’ to Peñafiel is a must if time allows, whilst history buffs can make the short trip to Tordesillas, site of the historic treaty of the same name by which the Portuguese and the Spanish divied up the world between them with the Pope’s blessing!
  • Churches of San Pablo and San Gregorio
  • Cathedral and Museum of Religious Artworks
  • Sample tapas in the main square and old town
  • Taste and buy the best wines of Castilla y León
  • Cervantes House-Museum
  • Columbus House-Museum
