In the centre of the interesting old town of Colunga where the Sueve mountains come down to the sea, Hotel Mar de Sueve is a traditional Asturian casona, beautifully restored and furnished with antiques, yet finished with a modern touch. Although enjoying a central location the hotel has a nice peaceful garden with a pleasant terrace for sitting out or enjoying breakfast al fresco. It has it's stylish original staircase, but has a lift too. Some of the rooms face the terrace & it gives onto the road at the back.
With Playa la Griega the pretty little port of Lastres just down the road, and Oviedo, Gijon and the Picos de Europa within easy reach, this is the ideal base for exploring this lovely part of Asturias.

Colunga, North Spain

The small market town of Colunga enjoys a privileged position between the Sueve mountain range, precursor to the Picos de Europa just behind, and the lovely coastline of central Asturias.

Within a short drive are the beaches of La Isla and La Griega, the latter of which boasts some good fossilised dinosaur footprints, of which there are several examples along this coast, giving rise to the opening of the Museum of the Jurassic, just outside the town on the way to Lastres.

Lastres itself just a couple of kilometres away is a lovely little fishing village, still active and, like Colunga, little affected by tourism.

  • Walking – coastal routes, Sierra del Sueve, Picos de Europa.
  • Beaches – Lastres, Isla, La Griega.
  • Watersports – sailing, diving, fishing.
  • Dinosaur coast – museum between Lastres & Colunga, beaches with fossilised footprints all along this coast.
  • Gastronomy – seafood restaurants for all budgets and cider houses in the local Asturian style.
