Torrelles del Foix, Catalonia
Set amongst vineyards the small unassuming village of Torrelles de Foix makes an attractive tranquil base for exploring the Penedés region and perhaps further afield. The town itself has a couple of bars (serving food), a small supermarket and a municipal pool, there’s a place to rent bikes and plenty of good walks direct from the village. Nearby San Marti Sarroca (it’s possible to walk there along footpaths) is a veritable culinary hotspot with eight restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.
All the major Cava producers are nearby along with many ‘boutique’ style bodegas, which also produce some excellent reds and whites. The nerve centre for the region, the market town of Vilafranca del Penedés, is only 14 km away.
Within half an hour’s drive you can find yourself on the lovely beaches of the Costa de Garraf, including the beautiful town of Sitges or the less well known, low key Altafulla, or in the famous monastery of Montserrat. An hour’s journey will take you to Barcelona (also accessed by train from Vilafranca), or to Tarragona, a lively Mediterranean city recognized as a heritage site due to its wealth of Roman ruins.
