The Parador de Verin is a classic Galician manor house set on a hilltop near the border with Portugal with fantastic views to the imposing, medieval fortress of Monterrei, the town of Verin and beautiful valley of Tamega.

The Parador has peaceful gardens and a lovely pool as well as a renowned restaurant where you can enjoy the delicious local Galician cuisine and the local D.O. Monterrei wines.

The spacious, comfortable rooms are traditionally decorated with antique-style furniture, some with beamed ceilings and some offering fortress views. There is a bar and an inviting lounge with a traditional Galician fireplace for those days when the pool isn't quite so enticing.

Visitors to Verin come mainly for the waters, of Cabreiroa and Sousas, which are said to have curative properties or the wines but its position, where the main mountain passes to Leon and Portugal meet, makes it ideal as a base for exploring the borderlands. Ourense and Ribadavia are within easy reach as is Chaves on the Portuguese side and the friendly staff will ensure that you get the most out of your visit to the area.

Verín, North Spain

Verín is the main market-town in the Monterrei region, just over the border with Portugal set on the river Támega. Its ancient carnivals are well known, as are its mineral water springs and castle.

The fortress of Monterrei preserves its walled enclosures, the Gothic church of Santa María de Gracia and the palace of the Counts of Monterrei, which today is a Parador.

The Verín Carnival has been declared a festival of national tourist interest, famous for its flour wars and especially for Cigarrón, the main character in traditional dress and  wooden mask who whips locals and visitors.

The town is also justifiably well known for its octupus "pulpo" – don't miss a visit to the "Casa do Pulpo" which has been serving it as their speciality since 1938!

The towns location at the junction of the mountain passes (and now the motorways) between Galcia and neighbouring León and Portugal, make it ideal for exploring or as a stop-over on the way through the region.

  • Explore the Palace of the Counts of Monterrei.
  • Explore the historic city center, including the church of Santa Maria and the Jewish quarter.
  • Visit the local wineries of the D.O. Monetrrei.
  • Relax in the the nearby thermal baths of Outariz (and many more)
  • Visit the nearby thermal springs of Ourense.
