In the far west, Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park has straightforward hiking trails. The park features beautiful alpine scenery. In the beautiful Val d’Aran and Vall de Boí, charming villages gather around 11th-century Romanesque churches. This creates a magical and timeless scene.

Head east through Cerdanya. This area has a  micro-climate which lies between Andorra and the Sierra de Cadí.

You will reach the lovely lakeside resort of Puigcerdá. From there, continue to the Vall de Nuria. Here, you can take the rack railway up to 2000 meters.

As you approach the Costa Brava, you will find the Volcanic Park of La Garrotxa. This area has a remarkably different landscape. It also features ‘Cuina Volcanica,’ a unique local cuisine. In Santa Pau, Besalú, and Castellfollit, you can see some of Spain’s most beautiful medieval villages

Itinerary

Day 1 & 2- Barcelona Province - Cardona, Solsona & Montserrat

  • Magnificent Cardona Castle - now the Parador

  • Cardona salt mountain & mine - source of vast medieval wealth

  • Solsona, famous for its carnival traditions

  • Visit Monserrat with its famous monastery

  • Try the local Pla de Bages wines

Day 1 & 2 - Barcelona Province - Cardona, Solsona & Montserrat

Day 3 & 4- Val d'Aran, Boí and Aneu

  • Gateway to the Parc Nacional d’ Aiguestortes i Estany

  • Unique culture, architecture in the Val d’Aran

  • Parc Nacional del Alt Pirineu with the highest peaks

  • Churches – Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque

  • Mountain gastronomy with local cheeses, honey and even local caviar!

Day 3 & 4 - Val d'Aran, Boí and Aneu

Day 5 & 6- Cerdanya and La Seu d'Urgell

  • Visit the Romanesque Cathedral of La Seu

  • Olympic watersports facilities on the Segre river

  • Easy access to Andorra

  • Explore pretty, lakeside Puigcerdá

  • Hike in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park

  • Medieval Llivia, Catalan enclave in France

Day 5 & 6 - Cerdanya and La Seu d'Urgell

Day 7 & 8- Vall de Nuria

  • Take the Rack Railway to Vall de Nuria

  • Discover the Sanctuary of Nuria

  • Take the cable car and have a picnic with the nicest views

  • Visit nearby Queralbs and its early Romanesque church

  • Explore Ribes de Freser and the numerous hiking trails around

Day 7 & 8 - Vall de Nuria

Day 9 & 10- La Garrotxa Volcanic Park

  • Medieval Santa Pau and Besalú’s Jewish quarter

  • Cuina Volcanica, ingredients grown in the volcanic soil

  • Visit Santa Margarida – the chapel in the crater

  • Dali museum in Figueras or hop down to the coast

  • Cycle, Segway, trek or balloon ride over the Volcanoes

Day 9 & 10 - La Garrotxa Volcanic Park

Getting There

Catalonia is extremely well served with flights from most UK airports to Barcelona, Girona (Costa Brava / Pyrenees) and Reus (Costa Dorada / Tarragona).

This circular tour can be adapted to suit any of those airports as an entry point.

Getting Around

For passengers travelling by air we will include a hire car as part of the package. Normally we include a 4 door economy class car but please let us know if you would like something different.

For those coming on the ferry you will use your own vehicle but in either case we will provide full instructions to arrive at each hotel, complete with GPS, as well as a map of the area.
