Between tastings?

Though a fantastic reason to visit the less touristic regions of Spain and Portugal, wine tasting alone doesn’t make a rounded holiday experience. There’s no need to worry as wherever you go there’s plenty to see and do within easy reach of the vineyards…

The wine regions are naturally centred on the iberian Peninsula’s great rivers; the Ebro, Duero / Douro and Tajo rivers which flow from the high plains of ‘meseta’; the Guadalquivir in the south and in the north the Sil, the ‘sacred river’. Beside their natural beauty these river basins have seen the passing of civilizations from the Tartesus through the Romans and Moors to the present day, leaving an immensely rich and varied heritage to discover and explore.

Other regions, like Rias Bajas in Galicia, Txakoli in Euskadi and Manzanilla in Sanlucar de Barrameda are right on the coast, allowing you to combine tastings with days on the beach.

Most regions can be combined with city visits – Pamplona, Burgos, León, Sevilla, Salamanca , Santiago and even Madrid are all within easy driving distance of the bodegas and of course the great wine centres of Logroño, Valladolid and Jerez are well worth a visit for their cultural aspects as well as the obvious. In Portugal Porto, Lisboa, Viseu and Évora combine perfectly with the wine regions of Douro, Dão and Alentejo.
